At the beginning of every year, people make resolutions in an effort to start the New Year on the right track. These resolutions are changes intended to improve a person’s overall life. This list shows some of the most popular resolutions so you can see how your list compares to people across the country.

1. Staying fit and healthy

At the top of most lists you’ll find the commitment to being more fit and healthy in the coming New Year.

Easy Tip: Sitting for too long can impact cholesterol, blood sugar, and other health factors. Stand instead of sitting at work. Swapping just two hours of sitting time for standing time can decrease blood sugar levels as well as triglyceride levels.

2. Enjoy life more

A lofty item that should honestly be on everyone’s list every year. Enjoying life to the fullest is one that definitely tops our list.

Easy Tip: Keep a journal of everyday things that make you happy and thankful. People who express gratitude tend to have improved emotional and physical health.

3. Spend less, save more

Every year we want to be able to save more and spend less and although it’s not getting easier, there are many things you can do to increase the amount you put away.

Easy Tip: Financial problems cause health problems, such as anxiety and insomnia. A simple step in the right direction is to open up a savings account. The more you save, the happier you'll be.

4. Get organized

Getting organized seems to be one of people’s leading priorities and with good reason. Organization leads to better productivity, efficiency, and an overall sense of control.

Easy Tip: Get organized the night before and start your day a bit earlier. Disruption in your morning routine (spilling coffee on your shirt or getting stuck in traffic) can create a stress cycle that lasts all day. Even a 10-minute head start can help avoid that hard-to-break stress cycle.

5. Travel more

See the world and make some friends along the way. Traveling more appears on many resolution lists. Just remember to try new wonderful and delicious food while you’re on the road.

Easy Tip: People who wander away from home are generally less stressed and anxious. Take weekend trips throughout the year. According to the Framingham Heart Study, people who travel annually are less likely to suffer a heart attack or develop heart disease.

Resolutions are great, they give you a goal and can inspire a fun start to the New Year. So, reach for the sky and make big resolutions that better you and those around you.
