After struggling with my weight and trying every diet out there since I was a teenager, I decided I wanted to learn more about bariatric surgery. My journey is about a happier and healthier self not strictly on lowering the numbers on the scale and seeing a slimmer reflection in the mirror. From the start we are taught from the surgical weight loss team that surgery is a tool and for long term success this is coupled with nutrition and exercise, this has stuck with me and I was ready.

I watched a video online and soon after the staff at Parkland Medical reached out to me to setup my first appointment. First impressions are important to me and from the staff who greeted me, to the nurses, the doctor, and dietitian everyone exceeded my expectations. The staff at Parkland Medical remember you and care about you, and I feel like I have known them forever, but it’s only been six months. I appreciate that they took the time to get to know me, listen to me and always make sure my questions are answered, even the ones I email into them. I received a handbook full of info at one of the first appointments and literally anything you need to know and want to know is in there, from what to pack in your hospital bag, to meal prep, and way more, I bring this to every appointment. There are multiple tests and appointments you need to do before surgery and I really like that they make all the appointments for you and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own and can do it at your own pace.

When it came time where I needed to decide which surgery I was going to do (I was a candidate for bypass and sleeve) Dr. Yarbrough went over the options with me again, talked me though possible short and long term complications, advantages and disadvantages for each. I decided to get the sleeve gastrectomy and am so happy with my decision.

Surgery went so smooth and I did not have any complications at all during or in the healing process. The office called and checked up on me after I left the hospital to make sure I was recovering well. After surgery I meet multiple times with the dietitian who helps me stay on track each step of the way with my diet.

I would recommend to anyone out there who is thinking about a happier and healthier life to reach out to the Parkland Medical Center Surgical Weight Loss Program. They have the best staff, a very knowledgeable and approachable surgeon, Dr. Yarbrough, and their program is not just about preparing you for surgery, post-surgery is included too. Although I have a few family members and two very close friends who have had bariatric surgery, I still attend the monthly support group sessions as a way to connect with others pre and post-surgery and to ask questions as well as gain tips and tricks for long term success.

I currently am 40 days out from surgery. I have lost a total of 45 pounds since my first visit to the office six months ago. I am still in the beginning stages of this life long journey but I am beyond happy that I did it. I am already enjoying more energy and my knowledge relationship with food.
