Through Parkland Medical Center's cardiac rehabilitation program, we'll help you recover following treatment, return to healthy living after a heart event and manage your heart health moving forward. Our cardiology team will also help you transition from surgery to independent care through weekly classes and other resources focused on heart-healthy living.

Your cardiologist or primary care doctor may recommend cardiac rehabilitation to help you recover from events including heart attack, stent placement or surgery, or to help you manage chronic heart diseases.

Our two-phase program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and medically directed by a Parkland Medical Center board-certified cardiologist.

Our cardiac rehabilitation team work with you to develop a custom care plan for your long-term heart health. Your rehabilitation team includes:

Our two-phase cardiac therapy program

Phase I of cardiac rehab begins when you're an inpatient at Parkland. Phase II starts soon after discharge and continues to help you return to function as quickly as possible.

Program components include educational programs to help you understand your condition and avoid future heart problems.

These 10 classes include:

  • A weight management class by our dietician
  • Healthy eating by dietician
  • Stress management
  • Stress reduction techniques
  • Exercise
  • Blood pressure (hypertension)
  • A&P of heart
  • Cardiac medications
  • Blood sugar management
  • Risk factors

Also included:

  • One-on-one counseling with our registered dietitian can be scheduled if desired
  • Medically supervised progressive exercise therapy
  • Smoking cessation education
  • Emotional support

Ongoing heart health support

Ongoing heart health support will continue with regular follow-up with your cardiologist. The cardiac rehab team remains available as a resource you may call with questions.

You can also continue to support your heart health through:

  • Health fairs/screenings

At your intake a complete history will be discussed to create your personal exercise program.
