Parkland Medical Center physicians, leaders, and clinicians gathered this week to celebrate the receipt of the Robert A. Warriner III, M.D., Center of Excellence award, which was given to the Parkland Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine because of its achievements in clinical quality. For two consecutive years the Center has achieved patient satisfaction rates higher than 92 percent and a healing rate of 91 percent in less than 30 median days, as well as meeting other quality standards. Of the more than 650 Centers within the Healogics Network, only 89 were honored with the prestigious Center of Excellence award and only 15 in the New England area.

Statistics around the disease of diabetes illustrate the importance of wound care. Diabetes affects 8 percent of the total U.S. population—an estimated 25 million people—and 26 percent of Americans over age 65. The incidents of chronic wounds, especially foot ulcers, increase among those diagnosed with diabetes. And, patients with diabetes are 10 times more likely to require amputation at some point in their lives.

The Parkland Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine offers highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and other chronic wounds that have not healed in a reasonable amount of time. Advanced treatments include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, negative pressure wound therapy, bio-engineered skin substitutes, biological and biosynthetic dressings and growth factor therapies. “What sets our Center apart is our interdisciplinary approach to wound care with a team of skilled nurses and clinicians—including podiatrists, general surgeons and infectious disease specialists—with expertise in wound care. We also take a personable approach to our patients and they appreciate the individualized attention they receive” states Peter Sebeny, M.D., medical director for Parkland Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine. “We strive to effectively coordinate and communicate the patient’s plan of care with outside specialists, the primary care provider, home health agency or inpatient rehabilitation or nursing facility,” Dr. Sebeny continues.

The Parkland Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine is a member of Healogics, Inc., the nation's largest provider of advanced wound care services. The award is named for Dr. Robert A. Warriner III, a pioneer in wound care and the former Chief Medical Officer for Healogics.
