Cancers we treat

Before treatment, you’ll receive a chemotherapy education book personalized for your specific condition. Teams of doctors will hold bi-weekly conferences to review the details of your situation, offer multiple opinions, map out your treatment plan and monitor your progress.

We treat virtually all cancers in adults, including:

  • Blood-related cancers (leukemia, lymphoma, etc.)
  • Brain and other neurological cancers
  • Breast cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Gynecologic cancer
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Kidney cancer
  • Lung and thoracic cancers
  • Pancreatic/liver/gallbladder cancer
  • Prostate and genitourinary cancers
  • Skin cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Urologic cancer

Cancer treatment options

For most patients, cancer treatment involves surgery and/or chemotherapy and biotherapy. We can also recommend preventive surgeries to keep cancers from growing. Other procedures, such as biopsies, can be used to diagnose cancer, ease pain, relieve side effects, support related procedures—such as inserting a chemotherapy port—or reconstruct damaged tissue.

Cancer surgery

Surgery is the most common cancer treatment. We leverage our extensive experience and advanced, minimally invasive technologies to reduce scarring and blood loss during surgery and speed your recovery.

Your surgical cancer treatment may include:

  • Reconstructive surgery and alternatives to total mastectomy
  • Neurosurgery at Portsmouth
  • Minimally invasive interventional radiology procedures, such as:
    • Radioembolization (injecting radio particles into a tumor)
    • Chemoembolization (injecting chemotherapy into a tumor)
    • High-heat microwave ablation (using microwaves to eliminate cancer cells)
    • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA; using high-frequency electrical currents to eliminate cancer cells)
    • RFA-assisted resection (combines RFA with tissue or partial organ removal)
    • Extreme-cold-based cryoablation techniques (using extreme cold to eliminate cancer cells)

Chemotherapy and biotherapy

Chemotherapy and biotherapy use powerful medications to treat cancer by destroying cells or stopping them from growing. We deliver these medications in several ways, including:

  • Intravenous (putting medicine directly into a vein)
  • Oral (liquids or pills taken by mouth)
  • Intramuscular (injections into a muscle)
  • Intrathecal (injections into the spinal fluid)
  • Subcutaneous (injections under the skin)
  • Intra-arterial (medication inserted directly into an artery)
  • Intraperitoneal (medication directly delivered to the abdominal cavity)
  • Infusion therapy (medication delivered through a catheter)

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses beams of energy to destroy cancer cells. We may recommend radiation therapy with other forms of cancer treatment, such as surgery.

Combined cancer treatments

We often combine surgery and chemotherapy with the following therapies to eliminate cancer cells:

  • Immunotherapy (provides medication to stimulate the immune system)
  • Adjuvant therapy (combines chemotherapy with surgery or radiation therapy)
  • Neoadjuvant therapy (used before surgery to reduce the size of a tumor and improve outcomes)
