At Parkland, we care for children and adults with a variety of needs and diagnoses, including:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, dysphonia and other neurologically–based disorders
  • Cognitive and developmental disorders
  • Dysphagia (swallowing difficulty or discomfort)
  • Head injury
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Language impairments
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Stuttering and voice disorders

Speech & Language Treatments & Services

We provide a wide range of pediatric and adult services to help patients achieve the highest possible level of speech cognition and swallowing ability. Speech therapy is integrated with other rehabilitation services focused on skill building and recovery. Treatment programs may include:

  • Videofluoroscopic swallowing study (modified barium swallow) to identify anatomic and physiologic abnormalities and develop treatment strategies to improve safety and efficiency of swallowing
  • Swallowing therapy, including neuromuscular re-education through biofeedback training, therapeutic exercise and patient/caregiver training in feeding and swallowing techniques
  • Training to improve the quality of speech and voice, often through the use of Visi–Pitch biofeedback
  • Training in strategies to maximize functional communication skills in cases where return of normal speech and/or language skills is not a realistic goal
  • Customized exercise program to improve neuromuscular performance for more effective speech, voice or swallowing function

Adaptive Equipment and Assisted Technology

As part of our continuum of personalized care, our therapists can recommend adaptive equipment and assistive technology, such as alternative communication devices. We train patients, family members and caregivers in the use of this equipment.
